It’s Teen Read Week!

October 22, 2009

Happy Teen Read Week! If you, like us, weren’t aware, Teen Read Week is a national literacy initiative, sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA),  aimed at teens, their parents, librarians, educators, booksellers and other concerned adults.

Teens have so many choices for entertainment these days. At Girls on the Run, we encourage girls to get outside and get moving as much as possible. However, we also emphasize to our girls the power of knowledge, which comes in large part by reading. Research shows that teens who read for fun have better test scores and are more likely to succeed in the workforce. Not to mention that reading is fun, relaxing, and FREE!

This year’s Teen Read Week theme is “Read Beyond Reality”, which encourages teens to read something out of this world, just for the fun of it. Check out Amazon’s Favorite Young Adult Fantasy Books for ideas on books that fit this week’s theme. We also recommend Rick Riordian’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series (and we are not sure why it is not on the Amazon list!)

For girls who aren’t so into fantasy, GOTR founder Molly Barker has written two incredible books that are very worth checking out. “Girls Lit from Within” provides 3rd-8th grade girls six easy to implement tasks, which instills in them the courage to stand up to the challenges of adolescence, stay committed to their own sense of self and help them stay “on track” through the teen years. “Girls on Track” takes the lessons of Girls on the Run and translates them into a curriculum for individual girls and the grown-ups who love them and want to see them break out of the dreaded “Girl Box.”
