GOTR Atlanta 10th Anniversary Celebration Recap

March 22, 2010

Girls on the Run of Atlanta officially launched its 10th Anniversary last week with a celebration and silent auction at the 191 Club. Thanks to our amazing sponsors and the more than 80 people who attended, the event was a huge success. First – we raised more than $3,500 for GOTR Atlanta – that’s enough to cover a full scholarship site of 16 girls as well as coach’s training for more than 100 coaches in metro Atlanta. Second –  dozens of people had the chance to hear from GOTR Founder Molly Barker for the very first time – and some of us were lucky enough to hear her speak for the second, third, or even tenth time!

GOTR supporter, 2009 SoleMate, and blogger Debbie Magley wrote about her experience at the 10th anniversary event on her blog, Atlanta Running.

As for me, the event was particularly meaningful for a few reasons. I’ve heard Molly’s story once before, but have never met her one-on-one (even though we’ve emailed a bit about blogging). I finally had a chance to talk with her individually last week. The most amazing thing to me about Molly is her ability to make you feel, after about 30 seconds of conversation, like you’ve known her forever, could tell her anything in the world, and that she actually cares what you have to say!

The other cool thing for me was getting to expose some of my non-GOTR friends to Molly and to GOTR. Most of my friends know that I’m deeply involved with this organization, and some of them have asked to learn more about it, but I’ve never felt before that I could adequately explain. Three of my friends from work, 2 other friends, and my fiance attended the event and heard Molly. They each came up to me individually afterward to say that they had had no idea how amazing GOTR was (guess my words just don’t pack the same punch! 😉 and that they were hoping to find some way to help. To make it even better, these friends weren’t even runners!

So, thank you to our sponsors, attendees, event planners on the GOTR staff and board, and especially to Molly for making the GOTR Atlanta 10th Anniversary celebration one that everyone in attendance won’t soon forget! And remember, GOTR’s 10th anniversary festivities don’t end here – the GOTR Spring 5K is fast approaching on May 1, sign up today!
