GOTR Coaches Speak Out: New Balance GOTR 5K

May 9, 2010

Today’s Coaches Speak Out series features guest contributor Jessica Sours, coach at Inman Middle in Atlanta. Did you miss Jessica’s other posts?

‘Twas the weekend’s best 5k race in Atlanta with 1,000 girls on the run!

The run, of course, is not just a race, but the ultimate challenge, taking the girls on a course complete with hills, valleys, loops and lots of friends and encouragement.  Our job, as coaches and running buddies, is to run while cheering, skipping and inspiring the girls to “keep moving” even during rest periods.  I now find myself running city races and wishing fellow runners well while I pass them, “keep it up”, “good job” or “we’re almost there.”  I always said I think I get more out of GOTR than the girls do.  Now I’m one of those people who seems like she’s enjoying the run, even the hills, a person I always thought was especially frustrating.  GOTR races and the girls who have fun with it have taught me that running doesn’t always have to be such a serious task.  At least, a 5K can be fun…we’ll see about the Peachtree!

A special thanks to all the moms, dads, aunts, cousins, brothers and sisters who joined the girls in their end of season 5K, especially the running buddies who get up super early to come race with a girl they may have never met.  You make this race better and more fun for all the girls….thank you!!!
