What workout did you do today?

July 24, 2010

With Atlanta’s high heat and high humidity, conditions can be dangerous for outdoor workouts. According to the examiner, “Parts of the south are on pace for the warmest stretch of summer weather on record as both daytime highs and overnight lows have been running well above normal in many areas since May.” So this may be a good time to start cross training. Crosstraining builds strength and flexibility in muscles your body doesn’t use when running. So, how do you crosstrain? As any triathlete will tell you, cycling and swimming are always good choices.

Personally, I like doing a boxing circuit once a week to supplement my running. I find that this kind of workout is great for both cardio and muscle strength and it keeps me from getting bored and burned out. My circuit training lasts around 45 mins to 1 hour and combines traditional boxing exercises (medicine ball, jump rope, footwork, speed bag, and heavy bag) cardio (steps ups, agility ladder, and sprints) and strength training (squats, pushups, crunches). I do this all in my garage away from the blazing Atlanta heat. If you don’t have the necessary equipment there are several boxing gyms in Atlanta that offer boxing circuit classes. So go on and give it a try. It’s a great way to reduce stress and get a great workout.
