For kids: Atlanta Hawks Bully Free essay contest and Google’s Science Fair

January 13, 2011

We are now into day four of Snowmageddon ’11, Hothlanta (a take on the ice planet Hoth from Star Wars, for those not in-the-know or not nerdy), Snowpocalypse, or SnOMG, depending on your naming tastes. That means four unplanned days of being stuck in the house with kids who are by now probably just as sick of the white stuff as you. If your kids need a productive distraction, I’ve found two projects that will not only keep their minds active and can also win them some great prizes.

First, the Atlanta Hawks are having an essay contest, Bully Free is the Way to Be. Elementary age children, Kindgergarten – 5th Grade, submit a 350-1000 word essay on the theme Bully Free is the Way to Be by January 24, 2011. Five 2nd place winners will receive tickets to the March 6, 2011 game along with other prizes and the 1st place essay will also receive tickets for this game as well as have Al Horford take them to their school in a limo! For the complete details and rules, click here.

Google Science FairGoogle is also hosting an event for students, the Google Science Fair. Just announced on their blog this week, this is an event that takes place globally. ¬†Students interested in science and technology have the opportunity to create projects entirely online by creating a site about their project. The deadline to participate is April 4th, 2011. That may seem like a ways away, but procrastination won’t work for this sort of project! The prizes for this are no joke, seriously, check out the full list. I have a feeling there will be some serious competition for this science fair!
