Join GOTR at Mile 18 of the Atlanta Marathon

September 26, 2011

Girls on the Run of Atlanta was selected as one of the Atlanta Track Club’s 18 non-profit organizations to participate in its Adopt a Mile Program, which provides support to the runners at the Atlanta Marathon on October 30, 2011.

As part of the Adopt a Mile Program, we are eligible to receive up to a $7,500 donation!  We’ll receive a base donation of $3,500, but the more volunteers we have and the more support we have in the form of costumes, signage, cheering and clean-up we provide, the more money we are eligible to receive. We’re going for the Full Monty– this will fund two scholarship sites.

So, we need your support at Mile 18! Click here for a course map.  We are in charge of a water stop (must be 14+ years of age) and a cheer zone (all ages welcome). We’ll be joined by New Balance and Phidippides and it promises to be lots of fun.

For all you runners out there, you know how important crowd support is…when you’re coming down a stretch (especially at Mile 18) and you’re met with music, inspirational signs, energetic volunteers handing out water and encouragement and then a few yards down, there’s a dedicated “cheer zone” with even more music and more spirited volunteers encouraging you on – it really motivates you to keep going or to pick up the pace just a little.

Want to join us at either our water stop or our cheer zone? Thank you so much! We are looking for 100 volunteers. Click here to sign up to volunteer on the 30th.

The quick 411 about volunteering:

  • Volunteer shift runs from 8 am to noon (this is an estimated time based on the Track Club closing the course when the 6 ½ hour marathon pace group has passed)
  • We are in charge of a water stop and a cheer zone along Mile 18 (Johnson Road near Morningside/Va Highland). Parking details coming soon.
  • Participants must be 14 years of age to work at the water stop.
  • Costume? Oh yeah. Wear your GOTR shirt; we’ll provide hats, capes, beads and signs.
  • Questions? Email us at or call us at 678.992.2670

Running the Atlanta Marathon?

Are you already running the marathon, either as part of a team or individually? Kudos to you! If you haven’t registered yet, in the promo code area, enter gotratl2011 and you will help us achieve our full $7,500 donation. If you’ve already registered and would like to be added to the GOTR team, please send us an email and we’ll get you retroactively added. Thanks in advance and good luck to all of you running on the 30th. We’ll be cheering you on at Mile 18!

Run for GOTR through SoleMates ®

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention another way to get involved with Girls on the Run, which is to join our adult charity running program of Girls on the Run of Atlanta and become one of our SoleMates.  You’ll be running your race (the Atlanta Marathon or another race) and raising funds for Girls on the Run of Atlanta. Our ultimate goal is to raise enough money to reach all girls, to inspire them to know and activate their limitless potential and to boldly pursue their dreams.

Here’s to road races and adopted miles!
