Atlanta Marathon and the GOTR Cheer Zone

November 4, 2011

As one of the Atlanta Track Club’s 18 Adopt-A-Mile participants, Girls on the Run of Atlanta was in charge of a water stop and a cheer zone at Mile 18 of the Atlanta Marathon and Marathon Relay. It was a bitterly cold morning when we first met, but once the sun came up and we got moving and cheering, it warmed up.

We donned our capes, inspirational hats and pink GOTR tees and took our posts. Some at the water stop faithfully passing out water to the runners and some with signs and noisemakers cheering on the runners. Neighbors joined in as the morning wore on and the crowd of runners moved along Johnson Road. Runners seemed in good spirits – the weather was perfect for running and our water stop was a nice flat stretch (sometimes hard to come by in Atlanta).

We were even more energized when we saw some of our SoleMates run by . We had several teams running the relay and fundraising for Girls on the Run of Atlanta! A special shout out to the Pink Panthers team for surpassing their fundraising goal!

We are grateful to our volunteers who came out to help with the water stop and the cheer zone. The Atlanta Track Club gave cash donations to the non-profits participating in the Adopt-a-Mile program. We are pleased that GOTR met all the criteria and was awarded the full $7,500 donation from the Track Club. GOTR will use this money to fund its “School to Shoes” program, which provides a free pair of New Balance shoes to every girl who participates in the program on scholarship.

In addition to cheering and hydrating the marothoners, we also rescued a bird who got swept up in the excitement of the morning and landed amongst the runners’ feet. A volunteer noticed the stunned bird on the pavement and scooped him up, gave him some water and after a breather, he was on his way. Whew.

I’m always amazed at the tenacity of runners and the determination they have to go the distance and this past race was no exception. We look forward to the Track Club’s 2012 Marathon and hope to be out there cheering again for all you runners.
