Week Eight: Almost Race Day

November 7, 2011

Shannon Foster joins us this Fall as our Girls on the Run of Atlanta Intern. She’s a student at Georgia Gwinnett College and will be shadowing three Girls on the Run and Girls on Track programs in metro Atlanta.

With only a few days left until race day, the weather has been perfect for training. Both of the elementary teams have been running at least two miles each practice and absorbing the positive advice from the lessons.

Whether in elementary or middle school, gossiping and bullying seem to be prevalent issues in social groups. Sometimes gossiping is not easy to recognize until it’s too late, when it “makes it into a problem. And, once you say it, you can’t get it back,” as Andrea from Gwinnett warned.

By raising awareness of what is and what is not bullying and gossiping, the GOTR girls receive a clearer understanding of what may be potentially hurtful to other girls. Many of the girls told me that they have been the topic of rumors or teased, and can emphasize with how their words and actions could hurt other girls.

GOTR is encouraging the girls to be mindful of their words and actions and follow the golden rule of “do unto others as you would have done unto you,” as the Gwinnett team indicated.
